Zone Valves For Baseboard Heating

Zone valves for baseboard heating

In most installations, the zone valves are in the returns, where the water is cooler. The cooler temperatures are easier on the valves. It has been the practice of some to place them in the supply using a manifold just above the boiler; this is often in conjunction with the “pumping away” concept.

How do I know if my zone valve is working?

We can put our hand on the need the zone valve head and see if it's warm. It should be very very hot

Are zone valves normally open or closed?

This is the "normally closed" type. However, manufacturers also sell a "normally open" type which would be OPEN to flow all the time, unless some control signal says otherwise.

How much does it cost to replace a zone valve?

Faulty zone valve: Zoning valves are what keep your home at a nice even temperature. When a zoning valve goes bad, you may experience loss of heat in parts of your home or extreme temperatures in others. The cost to repair a zoning valve usually ranges from $350 – $800+.

What happens if a zone valve is installed backwards?

Zone valves are designed to close gently while opposing the force of the water flow in the pipe. Most are spring loaded. If the valve is installed backwards, the flow of water catches the closure ball, overrides the spring, the valve snaps shut, and the water slams to a halt.

Where should zone valves be placed?

The zone valve needs to be positioned after the boiler and circulator of the central heating system. They can be located either on the hot side (before the hot water goes into the zone) or on the cold side (after the water goes throughout the building).

Why do zone valves fail?

Sometimes the zone valve will fail to operate properly. This can be caused by a malfunctioning part on the valve itself or by a faulty thermostat or a faulty connection between the two. You may need to troubleshoot the problem from a few different angles before you can determine the exact cause of the problem.

Can you leave a zone valve on manual?

Leaving the valve in the manual position will not harm the boiler, but you will always have heating as the boiler maintains its temperature for the hot water.

Should a zone valve get hot?

They do get quite warm but shouldn't get hot except when the pipe is hot. Since you had the valve sorted, call the person who repaired it.

Why are control valves on the return side?

The return side is preferable as it allows the valve and actuator to operate at a reduced temperature which can help protect valve seats and actuator electronics over the installation lifetime.

Should a central heating pump be on the flow or return?

So in summary, a correctly sized circulator will always work when located in the flow, but it may not work and may cause problems when located in the return line.

What is the difference between a zone valve and a circulator pump?

The "zone valve" gang retort that modern heating zone valves are as reliable or more reliable than [some models of] heating circulator pumps and that a zone valve costs a lot less. And adding zone control to an existing heating system may be less costly by adding a zone valve than by adding a circulator pump.

Do circulator pumps push or pull?

The pump pulls water in through the inlet and pushes it out through the outlet. Typically, there will be an arrow on the casing to identify the direction of flow so you know which is the inlet and outlet.
